How would you differentiate between these terms? How is Myth different from Legend in your mind? How is a fable different than a fairy-tale? OR are they all the same? You decide.
Answer in two paragraphs: the first answering the myth/legend question, the second answering the fable/fairy-tale query.
We will talk about this in class; feel free to consult a dictionary if needed. Post by Tuesday

Myths are stories that are passed down through history. Myths usually have to do with humans' and gods' relationships. Whether or not they are based on true facts they have affected cultures in a tremendous way. Legends are also stories that are passed down history, but they are not about gods and fantasy stuff like that. They are about humans doing incredible things. Granted they can be sometimes far-fetched.
ReplyDeleteI believe that fairy-tales and fables are the quite different. Fairy-tales have to do with magical creatures and most characters living happily ever after. While fables are usually fictional stories, they do have a deeper meaning in them. They all hold life lessons.
Legends usually have to do with people and mythicle creatures. Myths usually have to do with something physical like the holy grail. Myths are usually cosidered less likally to be true then legends.Myths and legends can be one and the same or completly different. In other words, legends can be myths and myths can be legends. It only depends what you decide to call it.
ReplyDeleteFables and fairy tales are also very simmilar. Fables and fairy tales are both intended to teach the reader a lesson for life. Fairy tales are usually less graphic then fables and are meant for young readers. Fables are usually more graphic and are meant for older readers. Again, it only depends on what you call it.
Myth and legend, fairy tale and fable. These terms are all very similar. They all take the form of oral or written stories and are all deeply ingrained in cultures around the world. I believe that myths are a type of legend that are used to explain an event that does not have another explanation. For example, the myth "Pandora's Box" explains how all ills came into the world. I also believe that mythology is deeply linked to religion, often to a religion that is no longer practiced. I think that myths can fit into the larger category of legend, though they are often less realistic. I think that legends are old stories that are widely believed but can't be proved either way.
ReplyDeleteI think that the relationship between fables and fairy tales is very similar to that between myths and legends. Meaning that a fable is a fairy tale, but a fairy tale is not always a fable. Fables are a specific form of fairy tales which often feature animals talking and acting like people. Fables are also used to communicate morals. Fairy tales often have talking animals and morals, but not always. I feel that fairy tales are used more solely for entertainment while fables often have educational purposes.
A myth is a fictional tale, originating from the Greek term mythos meaning “speech” that tells of gods and goddesses or other supernatural beings. Many myths are about the creation of the universe, or they explain moral values. Some say myths are the earliest forms of history and philosophy. A legend, on the other hand, loosely bases itself off a historical event. People retell and elaborate on legends from generation to generation. Rather than being about mythical beings, legends concern people.
ReplyDeleteA fable is a story involving talking animals. Fables conclude with a moral or lesson about life. They originate from the Latin term fabula, which means “story.” Fairy tales, like myths, may also involve magical creatures such as dragons and witches. These stories help to explain the real world with embellishments and mysticism.
